It was very great and it was a very packed weekend! We enjoyed it very much, and we would like to thank Hostal de la Luz and Diana Sanchez of Hostal de la Luz, who arranged everything for us. We had the following treats and treatments when we visited: It was very clean, very bright, and it just felt like we were at peace when we were here. The ambiance in the resort was very calming, and we liked it very much. This was a statue that was displayed outside of our room. These doors were pretty cool too, and it leads up to our private balcony. For someone who shares a bunk bed with two other people, we were very satisfied with sleeping on our own beds!ĭante wanted a photograph of himself on the bed, so here it is. Shauna and I each had a very comfortable bed for ourselves. It comes with a hammock, a table, a set of chairs, sunshine, and a view of these majestic Tepoztlan mountains. Obviously, Dante wanted one of himself too! Of course, I had to take some portraits with my darling boy, Dante.Īlso, a solo portrait of myself that I begged and annoyed Shauna into taking for me. Obviously, we had to take photographs because us enjoying such a nice hotel room to ourselves was very rare occurrence when you are backpacking. I took my roommate, Shauna, since they said that I could bring an extra guest. We have never been to one, so it was extra exciting! You can have your meals right here, overlooking the mountains!Īs soon as we walked into the place, we knew that this was a different kind of resort. We were up for a meals at their restaurant, massages, a hydrochakral therapy, a temazcal, and swimming up until we got tired! It sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? Well, it sure was! ![]() It was a bit far from the city, but the journey was so worth it!Īs soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a nice lady who walked us through our schedule for that weekend. We were excited!Īfter eating lunch in the city proper, we took a taxi for about 45 minutes to get to Hostal de la Luz. We knew, right then and there, that we were not in the city anymore. Tepoztlan was about two hours away from Ciudad de Mexico, and we took the bus from the South Bus Station on the very end of the blue line.Īs soon as we arrived in Tepoztlan, we were greeted by these majestic mountains. We came to Tepoztlan by the invitation of Hostal de la Luz, and boy, did we have a wonderful weekend! With the quarantine season making everyone quite bored and restless, I figured it would be great to look back on a magical weekend spent in Tepoztlan.

Relying on oral histories, photographs, and archival research, Safari Nation engages both with African historiography and with ongoing debates about the “land question,” democracy, and citizenship in South Africa. Safari Nation details the ways in which black people devoted energies to conservation and to the park over the course of the twentieth century-engagement that transcends the stock (black) figure of the laborer and the poacher.īy exploring the complex and dynamic ways in which blacks of varying class, racial, religious, and social backgrounds related to the Kruger National Park, and with the help of previously unseen archival photographs, Dlamini’s narrative also sheds new light on how and why Africa’s national parks-often derided by scholars as colonial impositions-survived the end of white rule on the continent. According to author Jacob Dlamini, there is another side to the park, a social history neglected by scholars and popular writers alike in which blacks (meaning Africans, Coloureds, and Indians) occupy center stage. The Kruger National Park is South Africa’s most iconic nature reserve, renowned for its rich flora and fauna. Safari Nation opens new lines of inquiry in the study of national parks in Africa and the rest of the world. Nancy Jacobs, author of Birders of Africa: History of a Network Following its own eclectic route through rural reserves, cities, and mines, from Table Mountain to the lowveld, Safari Nation offers a bold argument that by making claim on the more-than-human world, black South Africans created an inclusive nation.” On their way, they made a space of belonging through political effort, not nativism. ![]() Rather, Jacob Dlamini describes people on the move towards Kruger National Park, a place where conservation meant racial exclusion. “This book is about nature and black South Africans, but not as daughters and sons of the soil. William Beinart, author of Rise of Conservation in South Africa Dlamini does not pursue a polarized interpretation of the park and conservation as simply white/colonial constructs but instead develops a growing literature that presents African people as engaged in many different facets of park history, as agents, and conservationists.” “ Safari Nation is a highly original treatment of the history of Kruger National Park from a black perspective. Heidi Gengenbach, author of Binding Memories: Women as Makers and Tellers of History in Magude, Mozambique Dlamini’s skillful storytelling throughout the book manages to balance compassion and concern for justice with careful empirical detail in a direct, graceful prose that makes Safari Nation an enjoyable read from start to finish.” “An innovative work of intellectual, political, and social history, Safari Nation advances a compelling new explanation for why the ANC government has chosen not to dismantle colonial-era conservation projects whose origins lie in the dispossession of countless black families. Saul Dubow, author of South Africa's Struggle for Human Rights Jacob Dlamini captures South African experiences of nature and leisure that have largely escaped the historical profession, focusing his sharp eye on the significant minority of black South Africans who managed to live ’with-as opposed to under-colonialism and apartheid.’ An enjoyable book, full of surprises.” “In Safari Nation, the Kruger Park and South African ideas of nature and nationality are revealed in profoundly new and insightful ways. As these subvariants spread, public trust was eroded in the Chinese government's zero-COVID policy, indicating that lockdown strategies had become ineffective and unsustainable for the Chinese economy. The spread of more infectious subvariants of the Omicron variant intensified these grievances. These complaints were difficult to suppress, despite the strict censorship of social media in China. This discontent was exacerbated by reports of poor conditions in makeshift hospitals and harsh enforcement of quarantines. Citizens were displeased with the economic effects of the lockdown, such as food shortages and the inability to work. In April 2022, the Chinese government imposed a lockdown in Shanghai, generating outrage on social media sites, such as Sina Weibo and WeChat. As these lockdowns became more widespread, they became lengthier and increasingly disruptive, precipitating increasing concern and dissent. These lockdowns began with the lockdown of Wuhan in January 2020, and soon spread to other cities and municipalities, including Shanghai and Xinjiang. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in mainland China, the Chinese government has made extensive use of lockdowns to manage COVID outbreaks, in an effort to implement a zero-COVID policy. Policemen wearing masks patrolling Wuhan Tianhe International Airport during the initial COVID-19 outbreak in January 2020. By early December, China pivoted away from many of its previous COVID restrictions by reducing testing, reducing lockdowns, and allowing people with mild infections to quarantine at home, effectively abandoning the zero-COVID policy. ![]() There had also been reports of protesters being beaten and showered with pepper spray before detainment. The police had largely allowed such rallies to proceed although in Shanghai, officers had reportedly arrested several protesters. The subjects in protest evolved throughout the course of the unrest, ranging from discontent with the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its general secretary Xi Jinping, to inhumane working conditions brought on by the lockdowns, and human rights abuses against ethnic Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Protesters across the nation demanded the end of the government's zero-COVID policy and lockdowns. Further small-scale protests inspired by the Sitong Bridge incident ensued in early November, before widespread civil unrest erupted following a 24 November building fire in Ürümqi that killed ten people, three months into a lockdown in Xinjiang. The incident was subsequently censored by state media and led to a widespread crackdown behind the Great Firewall. ![]() The demonstrations had been preceded by the Beijing Sitong Bridge protest on 13 October, wherein pro-democracy banners were displayed by an unnamed individual and later seized by local authorities. Discontent had grown since the beginning of the pandemic towards the policy, which confined many people to their homes without work and left some unable to purchase or receive daily necessities. Colloquially referred to as the White Paper Protests ( Chinese: 白纸抗议 pinyin: Bái zhǐ kàngyì) or the A4 Revolution ( Chinese: 白纸革命 pinyin: Bái zhǐ gémìng), the demonstrations started in response to measures taken by the Chinese government to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country, including implementing a zero-COVID policy. ![]() Cities in China where protests against COVID-19 lockdowns occurredĪ series of protests against COVID-19 lockdowns began in mainland China in November 2022. ![]() I’m not picturing or playing a particular hole for this practice. I’ll pull a wedge and hit a recovery shot if I hit the previous shot poorly. I’ll clean the club and put it back in my bag. I hit that shot after going through my preshot routine. Hit the ball and put the headcover back on. I’ll pull driver through 5-wood to simulate my tee shot. It is the only way I practice these days and I wish I had figured this out years ago. This is the fastest way to take improvements on the range to the course. When not doing focused block practice: You should be switching clubs and targets for every shot. We leave swing thoughts behind, focus on our target, and let the swing just happen. The goal is to take whatever skills we have and maximize them with proper focus and preparation. We should devote at least equal time, if not more, to playing focus. etc.) This is where we set up stations and focus on our one thing for the session. We all should be improving some skill in our golf game. It’s ok to practice skill development and playing focus in the same practice session, but never at the same time. 8) Practice Skill Development or Playing Focus We are trying to simulate on course conditions so our game will translate from practice to play easier. Set up and go.Įach shot gets full attention. Then.Ĭross over an imaginary line about 3 feet from your ball and enter the Play box. Rehearse a swing or two exactly the way you want it to happen for real. Formulate your entire plan for this shot and only this shot. This distance isn’t crucial, but you don’t want to be in the hitting area. Stand behind your ball around 6 feet or so. This is where the concept of the “Think box” and “Play box” come into play. We try to hit our tee shot in play, and hit whatever club is called for next. We’ll take holes from the course we play and “play” it on the driving range. My friends and I occasionally play a game on the range. Point is, pick one drill or weakness in your game per session and give it your full attention. Often, fixing one swing flaw will fix one or more other flaws. The trick to rapid improvement is to concentrate on one at a time. We all have plenty of things we need to work on in our swing. ![]() 6) Practice One Thing at a Time (Block Practice) You can work your way up to full swings, but it’s best to groove your new swing first. Tommy says to go chest-high in the backswing to chest-high in the follow through. It’s exceedingly difficult to feel what you need to feel and move the way you need to move when you are trying to kill the ball.Īnother way to think of this is to go back only halfway or three-quarters in your backswing. They suggest going half-speed or three-quarter speed (at most) when you are trying to groove a swing fix. ![]() ![]() But, this isn’t how we improve or make swing changes. We all have a tendency to go full-bore and hit the ball as far as we can on every swing. This is something I learned listening to Tommy Fleetwood and Mike Malaska. 5) Don’t Go Full Speed When Working On Something One 10 yards in front of you on your target line. Mike Malaska suggests using 3 alignment rods to set up your practice station every time you practice. There’s a reason every PGA pro has alignment sticks in his bag. The bare minimum you should have is an alignment stick or two on the ground so you know exactly where you are aiming. Really want to dial it in? Go through your pre shot routine before every shot. You learn nothing but bad habits by beating balls without a clear purpose for each swing.ĭid that shot come off as you wanted? Yes? Great! No? Why? I always, Always keep my practice balls a step or two away so it is impossible for me to stand in one spot and drag ball after ball and fire away. 3) Keep Your Bucket of Balls Just Out of Reach You can take less time, hit fewer golf balls, and help your game a lot more.
